Bainigí bhur gcuid dinnéir!

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

Ar an Satharn, an 12ú Lúnasa, bhí imeacht ríspeisialta do theaghlaigh ar siúl ar Fheirm Bhaile Uí Thuatháile. Seans gur chuala tú roimhe faoin choincheap ‘Dig your Dinner’ a bhíonn ar siúl ar an Fheirm le linn míonna an tsamhraidh, ach an raibh a fhios agat go ndéanann Feirm Bhaile Uí Thuatháile, i gcomhpháirtíocht le Lionra Leitir Ceanainn, ‘Bainigí bhur gcuid dinnéir’ fosta. Eagraíodh an t-imeacht seo trí mheán na Gaeilge den chéad uair riamh anuraidh, agus d’éirigh go geal leis agus mar gheall air sin, bhí lúchair orainn é a chur ar fáil arís i mbliana!

Tháinig scata galánta amach, idir óg agus aosta, chun páirt a ghlacadh san imeacht seo. Ar dtús, bhí deis ag na teaghlaigh turas treoraithe thart faoin gharraí a dhéanamh agus ansin, bhuail achan duine leis na cónaitheoirí eile ar an fheirm - gamhna óga, bainbh agus cearca ina measc! Tar éis bualadh leis na hainmhithe, chuaigh an grúpa chuig an pháirc chun na glasraí úra a bhaint. Bhí cráta ag gach teaghlach agus níorbh fhada go raibh na boscaí uilig líonta le cairéid, cairéid dhea-dhathacha, meacain bána, cabáistí, prátaí, gairleog, cál dubh, brocailí, oinniúin, spionáiste, cóilis agus níos mó.

Lá teaghlaigh iontach a bhí ann, agus is cinnte go raibh dinnéir bhlasta lán glasraí ite ag achan duine ina dhiaidh. Fiú mura raibh tú in ann freastal ar an imeacht seo i mbliana, is féidir leat bualadh isteach chuig siopa na feirme am ar bith chun glásraí úra agus bia ceardaí áitiúil eile a cheannach. Ina theannta sin, bíonn foireann Bhaile Uí Thuatháile ag Margadh na bhFeirmeoirí, ag Bóthar an Phoirt, gach maidin Dé Sathairn - agus na glasraí uilig réidh acu ionas nach gcaithfidh tú iad a thochailt!

On Saturday, the 12th of August, an incredible family event was held at Ballyholey Farm. Perhaps you've already heard of the concept 'Dig your Dinner' which takes place on the farm during the summer months, but did you know that Ballyholey, in collaboration with Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, also host the Irish version - 'Bainigí bhur gcuid dinnéir'. This event was first held in Irish last year and was a great success, and therefore we we're delighted to get the opportunity to do it all over again!

A lovely group came out, both young and old, to participate in the event. Firstly, the families had a guided tour of the field, before everyone met the other farm residents - young calfs, piglets and hens. After meeting the animals, the group went out onto the field to start digging for fresh vegetables. Each family had a crate to fill, and it wasn't long until they were all overflowing with carrots, rainbow carrots, parsnips, cabbage, potatoes, garlic, kale, broccoli, onions, spinach, cauliflower and more.

It was a fantastic family day-out, and there was certainly some healthy vegetable dinners eaten afterwards. If you weren't able to attend this event this year, you can always call into their farm shop anytime during the week to buy some fresh vegetables and other local produce. Or alternatively, the Ballyholey team always attend the Farmers Market on the Letterkenny Port Road every Saturday morning - with the veg all ready so you don't have to go digging yourself!
