Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Líonra Leitir Ceanainn's Autumn Festival is on its way!

Tá Féile an Fhómhair ar na bacáin againn arís don tríú bhliain! Tá ciall ceannaithe againn agus tá muid chun an fhéile a reáchtáil thar thréimhse níos faide i mbliana mar go bhfuil an oiread rudaí le bheith ag tarlú. Tá muid ag súil go mór le fáilte a chur roimh an phobal, idir lucht labhartha agus lucht foghlamtha na Gaeilge!

Is é an t-imeacht a chuirfidh tús ceart leis an fhéile ná an Lá Spraoi i bPáirc an Bhaile Dé Sathairn 30 Meán Fómhair 12 – 4:30 agus ceardlanna éagsúla ar siúl i rith an ama. Beidh ceardlann cheoil againn le hÚna Ní Bhriain @Ceol na Coille, ealaín le Feena @The Arty Fox, drumadóireacht le Maria Coleman @Comhcheol agus damhsa le Sarah-Marie @Pinehill Studio. Is é an rud is tábhachtaí faoin Lá Spraoi ná go mbíonn deis ag daoine bualadh isteach, bualadh le daoine eile, giota craice a bheith acu, Gaeilge a labhairt nó fiú cúpla frása agus focal a fhoghlaim. Féile an Fhómhair, our autumn festival is ready to rock for the third year! We have realised the importance of running the festival over a longer period of time given the number of events that are going to be happening. So this year, the festival will run from Friday 29 September until Sunday 8 October. We are looking forward to welcoming the public, both those who are Gaeilgeoirí and those who are learning Irish – or interested in doing so.

The first big event of the festival will be the Lá Spraoi –

Family Fun Day – in the Town Park on Saturday 30 September 12 – 16:30 with a variety of workshops running throughout the day. Úna Ní Bhriain from Ceol na Coille will be running a music workshop, Feena from The Arty Fox will be doing art, Maria Coleman from Comhcheol will have us drumming and Sarah Marie from Pinehill Studio will get us dancing! There will be a traditional music session with young local musicians, tea, coffee and treats available in the marquee and ceannairí or young leaders around to help with the events and to do face-painting.

The really important thing about the Family Fun Day is that it gives people an opportunity to drop in, to meet others, to have some fun and to speak Irish or even learn some new words and phrases in Irish. A great deal of Líonra Leitir Ceanainn’s work is about community development and days like this are absolutely central to that.

On Sunday 1 October there will be a guided walk for adults with Aodh Mac Gairbhe as our guide. We plan to provide a bus to take walkers to the trail head - more details to follow.

On Wednesday October we will be screening the film Róise & Frank in Century Cinemas at 8pm. Tickets only cost €5 and you can buy them in our office, we can send you a Sum Up link ( contact pobal@lionralc.ie) or you can buy them from a Líonra Leitir Ceanainn member on the night. You will also have the opportunity to meet up before the film at 7pm in Backstage Bar & Grill and / or afterwards in the Station House Hotel. We like to provide people with an opportunity to chat!

And as for opportunities for conversation, there will be plenty happening during the festival:-

· Pop-Up Gaeltacht in The Cottage on Friday 29 September at 8pm

· Ciorcal Comhrá @ Chill Out Café on Saturdays at 12 organised by Cara House.

· Ciorcal Comhrá @Cara House on Mondays at 10

· Ciorcal Comhrá every Tuesday in the Líonra Leitir Ceanainn office at 7 Castle Street @10

· Festival Ciorcal Comhrá in An Grianán Theatre - date and time to be confirmed

The Oíche Ghaelach Irish Night is the big event on the calendar for Irish speakers in the Letterkenny area. This event will be happening again in Castle Grove Country House Hotel on Friday 6 October where we will have a fabulous three-course meal and wonderful music. Tickets cost €40 and are available from members of the Líonra Leitir Ceanainn committee, from the office at 7 Castle Street or you can be sent a SumUp link or bank details to pay for them without having to call in. There is a limited number of tickets – so be quick!

There will be a guided walk for families on Saturday 7 October - more details to follow.

To finish up the festival there will be a family music session together with Comhaltas in the Silver Tassie on Sunday 8 October at 4pm.

While these are the events for the public we even have more happening in the schools! Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair and Annie Quinn will be running storytelling & art workshops in Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin. A group of young storytellers from Coláiste Ailigh will be visiting some of the other primary schools in the area too and bringing with them some of the great Irish language resources developed by Donegal County Library. In cooperation with Highland Radio and Learning Waves we are providing a full day of workshops to the Transition Year students in Coláiste Ailigh. Each student will attend three workshops – Áine Nic Suibhne will be exploring media literacy, Caoimhe Ní Chathail will be helping the group develop their radio skills and Póilín Nic Géidigh will be helping them film and edit content for TikTok.

We are very grateful to Foras na Gaeilge’s Festival Scheme from which we received funding to run this festival. You can contact us ón 086 0751663 pobal@lionralc.ie 074 912 7479.
