POBAL NUA NA GAEILGE – Rang tosaitheoirí do dhaoine ag iarraidh blaisín Gaeilge

Cúpla seachtain ó shin, thosaigh Líonra Leitir Ceanainn rang tosaitheoirí san Ionad Thréadaí i Leitir Ceanainn. Tá grúpa maith acu le thart fá fiche duine ag freastal ar an rang agus níl aon dabht ach go mbíonn craic acu i rith an ranga! Tá éagsúlacht daoine sa ghrúpa agus iad tagtha anseo as na ceithre hairde. Chomh maith leis an Bhéarla agus an Ghaeilge ar ndóigh, tá go leor teangacha ag an ghrúpa mar shampla, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu agus Sinhalese. Is léir go bhfuil meas speisialta ag na teaghlaigh seo ar teangacha agus ar an Ghaeilge. Rinne an dream seo an cinneadh chun giota beag Gaeilge a fhoghlaim, go príomha chun a bheith ábalta cuidiú a thabhairt dá gcuid páistí agus iad ag déanamh a n-obair bhaile Ghaeilge. B’fhéidir go dtiocfadh linne a fhoghlaim ó na daoine seo mar phobal agus an meas atá acu ar an Ghaeilge, agus a chur leis an Ghaeilge agus iarracht a dhéanamh an teanga a labhairt.

Tá sé thar a bheith tábhachtach tacaíocht a chur ar fáil don dream nach bhfuil Gaeilge ar bith acu agus is iontach é go bhfuil deiseanna ar fáil don phobal seo ar leith chun an Ghaeilge a fhoghlaim. Tá an rang bunaithe ar fhuaimeanna agus ar frásaí bunúsacha ionas go mbeidh siad in ann cuidiú lena gcuid páistí. Thosaigh an chéad rang le beannú, cén dóigh tú féin a chur in aithne agus na fuaimeanna a bhaineann leis seo. Ansin, dhírigh siad ar frásaí beaga is féidir a rá le páistí, ar na huimhreacha agus an t-am mar shampla. I rith an ranga, déanann an grúpa iontach seo obair i ngrúpaí beaga ag caint agus ag comhrá lena chéile as Gaeilge, ag cleachtadh na bhfrásaí, na bhfuaimeanna agus ag cur ceisteanna ar a chéile, fad is a bhíonn siad ag foghlaim óna chéile.

Is féidir an grúpa seo aon duine a spreagadh dá bhrí ar a ndíograis, a bhfonn foghlamtha, agus a bhfuinneamh. Ba chóir daoibh a bheith an-bhródúil as an mhéid mór atá foghlamtha acu go dtí seo agus is léir go bhfoghlaimeoidh siad níos mó!

Tá an rang maoinithe ag an Bhord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Dhún na nGall faoi scéim atá acu ‘Learning for Living’ agus tá go leor ar fáil acu sa scéim seo.

THE NEW IRISH LANGUAGE COMMUNITY – Beginners Class for people who want a taste of the Irish language

A couple of weeks ago, Líonra Leitir Ceanainn began a beginner’s Irish class in the Pastoral Centre Letterkenny. They have a good group with around twenty people attending the class and there’s no doubt that they have a bit of craic during the class too! There is a variety of people in the group who have come from the four corners of the world. Indeed, as well as English and Irish, this group have lots of languages, for example, Tagalog, Hindi, Urdu, and Sinhalese. It’s clear that these families have a special respect for languages and for Irish too. This group decided to learn a bit of Irish, primarily to be able to help their children with their Irish homework. Perhaps we could learn from these people as a community and the respect that they have for Irish, and to learn Irish and make an effort to speak the language.

It is extremely important to make support available for the group that doesn’t have any Irish and it is brilliant that there are opportunities available for this particular community to learn Irish. The class is mainly based on sounds and basic phrases so that they will be able to help their children. The first class began with greetings, how to introduce yourself, and the sounds that are associated with these words and phrases. Then, they focused on little phrases to say to their children, the numbers, and the time for example. During the class, this brilliant group works in small groups chatting together in Irish, practising the phrases, the sounds, and asking each other questions, all while they are learning from each other.

This group could inspire anyone with their dedication, their desire to learn, and their brilliant energy. They should be very proud of the great amount that they have learned so far and it is clear that they will learn lots more!

The class is funded by the Education and Training Board Donegal under their scheme ‘Learning for Living’ and there is a lot more available under this scheme.
