Bhain muid sult mĂłr as lĂĄ breĂĄ ar an fheirm i lĂĄr an tsamhraidh!
âBhraith sĂ© amhail is dĂĄ mba infheistĂocht ollmhĂłr Ă©!â arsa Tracey ag cur sĂos ar an bhuaireamh a bhĂ orthu nuair a rinne siad an cinneadh tĂșs a chur le gnĂł miondĂola a fhorbairt ar Fheirm Bhaile UĂ ThuathĂĄile. Go dtĂ sin ba ghnĂł mĂłrdhĂola glasraĂ a bhĂ acu ach faoi thĂșs 2014 bhĂ sĂ© ag Ă©irĂ nĂ ba dhĂșshlĂĄnaĂ praghas maith a bhaint amach. Rinne John agus Tracey cinneadh cĂĄbĂĄin adhmaid a chur ar an fheirm agus glasraĂ a dhĂol Ăłn tsuĂomh sin. Don chĂ©ad bhliain nĂ raibh daoine ach ag dul i dtaithĂ ar an choincheap seo, go dtiocfadh leo bualadh isteach agus a gcuid glasraĂ a cheannach dĂreach Ăłn fheirmeoir. Bâas sin a thĂĄinig an rosc atĂĄ ag Feirm Bhaile UĂ ThuathĂĄile, âBĂodh aithne agat ar dâfheirmeoir agus eolas agat ar do chuid biaâ, nĂł âKnow your farmer, know your foodâ mar atĂĄ sĂ© i mBĂ©arla.
Ă ghlac siad leis an dĂșshlĂĄn sa bhliain 2014 tĂĄ forbairt as cuimse tagtha ar an ghnĂł agus ar an dea-chĂĄil atĂĄ ag Feirm Bhaile UĂ ThuathĂĄile mar sholĂĄthrĂłir glasraĂ Ășra. NĂ amhĂĄin glasraĂ ach bia ceardaĂ ĂĄitiĂșil fosta a bhĂonn ar fĂĄil sa siopa agus ag Margadh na bhFeirmeoirĂ a bhĂonn ar siĂșl maidin DĂ© Sathairn 9 â 1 in aice le CBM Signs ar BhĂłthar an Phoirt i Leitir Ceanainn.
DĂ© Sathairn 30 IĂșil bhĂ imeacht rĂ speisialta ar siĂșl ar an Fheirm a bhĂ eagraithe i gcomhphĂĄirtĂocht le LĂonra Leitir Ceanainn. CĂșpla uair i rith an tsamhraidh dĂ©anann John âDig Your Dinnerâ a eagrĂș agus tagann daoine amach chun turas treoraithe thart faoin gharraĂ a bheith acu agus a rogha glasraĂ a bhaint. Seo an rud a rinneadh DĂ© Sathairn ach Ă© curtha ar fĂĄil i nGaeilge. BhĂ deis ag na teaghlaigh bualadh le cĂłnaitheoirĂ eile ar an fheirm fosta â na cearca, na gamhna agus dhĂĄ mhuc, Pip Squeak agus Georgio a thĂĄinig Ăł Loch Garman i ngluaisteĂĄn â cĂ© acu a bhĂ ag tiomĂĄint an cheist a bhĂ againn go lĂ©ir!
Suas linn ansin chun na pĂĄirce ĂĄit a raibh saibhreas glasraĂ ag fĂĄs agus rĂ©idh le baint ann, cairĂ©id agus cairĂ©id dhea-dhathacha, meacain bĂĄna, cabĂĄistĂ, prĂĄtaĂ, gairleog, cĂĄl dubh, brocailĂ, oinniĂșin, spionĂĄiste agus tuilleadh. BhĂ bosca mĂłr le lĂonadh ag gach teaghlach agus lĂonta go barr â agus thar barr â a bhĂ siad! Rinne muid plĂ© ar na glasraĂ â go hĂĄirithe orthu siĂșd a bhĂ neamhghnĂĄch dĂșinn, macasamhail an cĂĄl dubh â an bealach is fearr cĂłcaireacht a dhĂ©anamh orthu nĂł iad a ithe go hamh. BhĂ saineolaĂ beag maidir le bia amh againn â RĂonach, dhĂĄ bhliain dâaois agus Ă ag siĂșl thart fĂĄn gharraĂ, cĂĄl glas, brocailĂ nĂł cairĂ©ad ĂĄ piocadh agus ĂĄ ithe go dĂograiseach aici!
Seans nach mbeidh deis agat do dhinnĂ©ar a thochailt amuigh ar Fheirm Bhaile UĂ ThuathĂĄile arĂs go dtĂ an samhradh seo chugainn ach tapaigh an deis bualadh amach chun glasraĂ den scoth â agus rudaĂ deasa eile - a cheannach i siopa na feirme nĂł ag Margadh na bhFeirmeoirĂ maidin DĂ© Sathairn.
Dig your dinner!
âIt felt like a massive investment!â, said Tracey, describing the worry that went along with their decision to develop their own retail business at Ballyholey Farm. Up until that point, they had a large vegetable wholesale business but by the beginning of 2014 it was becoming more challenging to obtain a good price. John and Tracey made the decision to construct wooden cabins on the farm from which they could sell vegetables. For the first year, people were only getting used to the idea that they could call in and purchase vegetables directly from the farmer. And that is where Ballyholey Farmâs mantra emerged from: âKnow your farmer, know your food.â
Since taking on the challenge in 2014, the business has grown exponentially as well as Ballyholey Farmâs reputation as a supplier of fresh vegetables. Vegetables arenât the only thing available in the shop, as it also sells local craft food, and all of these products are also available at the Farmers Market that takes place on Saturday mornings between 9am-1pm beside CBM Signs on the Port Road, Letterkenny.
On Saturday 30th July, a very special event took place on the farm, jointly organised with LĂonra Leitir Ceanainn. A few times during each summer, John organises a âDig Your Dinnerâ event and people come out to the farm to enjoy a guided tour and to dig their own vegetables. Saturday 30th was one of these such events, with the bonus that the whole day took place through Irish. The families enjoying the day also had opportunities to meet the farmâs other residents â the hens, the calves and two pigs, Pip Squeak and Georgio that travelled up in a car from Wexford â which one of them was driving was the question on all of our lips!
Up we went then to the field where a wealth of vegetables were growing and ready for harvest, carrots and rainbow carrots, parsnips, cabbages, potatoes, garlic, black kale, broccoli, onions, spinach and more. Every family had a large box to fill and indeed they were filled â with some of them overflowing! We discussed the vegetables, especially those with which we were less familiar â such as black kale â talking about the best way to cook them or whether to eat them raw. We had an expert on raw food in our midst â RĂonach, two years old and marching about the vegetable patch picking up kale, broccoli and carrots and enthusiastically trying them!
You may not have the opportunity now to dig your dinner out at Ballyholey Farm again until next summer, but you do have plenty of time to seize the opportunity to call out and purchase delicious vegetables â and other tasty items â in the farm shop or at the Farmers Market on a Saturday morning.
