Tá féile úr nua ag teacht go Leitir Ceanainn, An Focal Beo ina ndéanfar ceiliúradh ar an Ghaeilge mar theanga shaibhir a nascann go smior le béaloideas, filíocht, fealsúnacht, amhráin, oidhreacht, stair, miotaseolaíocht, cruthaitheacht agus féin-ionannas na ndaoine. Mar a dúirt Bairbre Uí Chathail, Comhordaitheoir Pleanála Teanga le Líonra Leitir Ceanainn, “Tá muid ag iarraidh an fuinneamh agus an borradh atá faoin Ghaeilge a cheiliúradh le daoine agus cuireadh a thabhairt dóibh dul i ngleic le hamhránaíocht, scéalaíocht, cruthaitheacht agus filíocht. Dar leis an seanfhocal, “Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam”. Tá muidne chun léiriú cé chomh beo beathach is spleodrach atá an Ghaeilge agus pobal na Gaeilge!”

Mar chuid den fhéile beidh sleachta ó fhilí Thír Chonaill – Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, Dubhán Ó Longáin, Máire Dinny Wren agus Sam Ó Fearraigh - ar taispeáint ar phóstaeir mhóra i bhfuinneoga gnólachtaí agus eagraíochtaí an bhaile 2 – 13 Bealtaine. Cuirfear dúshlán roimh an phobal na sé phóstaer déag a aimsiú agus sonraí na háite ar aimsigh siad iad a chur isteach chugainn chun a bheith san iomaíocht duais €100 a bhaint – coinníollacha an chomórtais thíos. Tá cód QR ar gach póstaer fosta chun rochtain a fháil ar na dánta iomláine anseo ar an suíomh gréasáin.

Beidh Béile na Féile Dé hAoine 5 Bealtaine agus Gearóidín Breathnach mar aoi speisialta chun seisiún scéalaíochta agus amhránaíochta a sholáthar i ndiaidh an bhéile. Beidh ceardlann scríbhneoireachta ar siúl ar an Satharn 6 Bealtaine a bheidh oiriúnach do dhuine ar bith ar suim leo tabhairt faoin scríbhneoireacht agus deis a bheith acu foghlaim ó bheirt údar foilsithe den scoth. Beidh deis ag daoine, ar mhaith leo, teacht le chéile i Backstage Bar & Grill ina dhiaidh fá choinne chomhrá agus comhluadar. Beidh seisiúin scéalaíochta éagsúla ar siúl i scoileanna an bhaile, Teach Altranais Naomh Adhamhnáin agus An Líonra Náisiúnta Foghlama le linn na féile mar aon le ceardlann slám filíochta le Dubhán Ó Longáin do dhaltaí Rang 6 sa Ghaelscoil fosta agus comórtas Abair Amach do pháistí bunscoile. Beidh ceardlann do theaghlaigh ar siúl maidin Dé Sathairn 13 Bealtaine ina mbeidh deis acu mála scéalaíochta bunaithe ar an leabhar Rita agus an Dragún le Myra Zepf a dhéanamh. There is a new festival coming to Letterkenny, An Focal Beo, in which the richness of the Irish language which is utterly entwined with the folklore, poetry, philosophy, song, heritage, history, mythology, creativity and self-understanding of her people will be celebrated. Líonra Leitir Ceanainn’s Language Planning Coordinator, Bairbre Uí Chathail, says, “We want to showcase the energy of the Irish language and to invite people to engage through song, story, creativity and poetry. There is a saying, that a country without a language is a country without a soul. We want to show how vibrant and energising the Irish soul is.”

As part of the festival there will be excerpts from the work of Donegal poets Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair, Dubhán Ó Longáin, Máire Dinny Wren and Sam Ó Fearraigh on display in the shop windows of businesses and organisations around the town from 2 – 13 May. Members of the public are invited to find all 16 and send in the details of where they are in order to be entered into a draw for a €100 prize. See below for full competition conditions. The QR code on each poster also enables people to access the poems in full here on the website.


There will be a Festival Meal on Friday 5th May, with Gearóidín Breathnach as a special guest. After dinner we will move on to another venue for a session of song and story-telling. There will be a writing workshop with Réaltán Ní Leannáin and Dubhán Ó Longáin on Saturday 6th May which will offer anyone with an interest in writing Irish prose or poetry the opportunity to learn from two excellent published authors. On Wednesday 10th May An Cailín Ciúin will be shown in Century Cinema and tickets, costing only €5, can be bought on Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/an-cailin-ciuin-tickets-596866863857 or through the Líonra Leitir Ceanainn office. There will be an opportunity for anyone who wishes to gather afterwards for a chat in Backstage Bar & Grill. During the week there will be a variety of story telling events in local schools, St Eunan’s Nursing Home and in the National Learning Network as well as a slam poetry workshop facilitated by Dubhán Ó Longáin for 6th class children in Gaelscoil Adhamhnáin and a poetry recitation competition on Saturday 13 to which local schools have been invited. There will also be a story sack workshop on Saturday 13 with Anne Quinn where families will have the opportunity to create story telling props to go along with Myra Zepf’s wonderful book Rita agus an Dragún. The cost of this workshop is €5 and families need to have a reasonable level of Irish. Competition Rules

  • There are 16 size A2 posters (printed on corriboard) with a line of poetry from Sam Ó Fearraigh, Máire Dinny Wren, Eithne Ní Ghallchobhair or Dubhán Ó Longáin on display in various shop windows around the town - the shopping centre, main street and elsewhere - 2 - 13 May. (The posters at the Gaelscoil are not included in this 16)

  • Find the 16 posters and take note of the line of poetry and the name of the shop where the poster is.

  • Send an email to pobal@lionralc.ie with that information, the line of poetry and the name of the shop for each poster

  • The people who have found the most posters will be entered into a draw and there will be a €100 prize (as a voucher) for one lucky winner.
